It just gets worse!!!

GULLEYS WOOD WILDLIFE MEADOW Site of Scientific Interest – a message from the Beauchief Environment Group

Dear Ian

I am relating the sad news that Sheffield City Council have sold to Abbeydale Golf Club. A small notice went up at the weekend saying that title had passed to AGC so they can extend the course and whilst access is being allowed now, this will eventually cease.

You are no doubt aware through our newsletters that, after having had Countryside Stewardship for 10 years, in 2012 the Council applied for, and subsequently received, Higher Level Stewardship for this meadow along with Shene Field. As you know it is a highly valued wildlife site, unique in our area, and where botanical and other records have been kept for many years. It is used extensively by the whole community – not only by walkers and picnickers but also by schools as an educational resource. As far as we know, access has not been restricted for at least 25 years and possibly longer.

The sale appears to have been kept very secret so the community would not find out about it in advance. No notice was put up at the site advertising the Council’s intention to sell. For “Council” substitute “Property Services” as our local councillors and the city council’s Ecology Unit seem to know nothing about it. We are convinced that something is not quite right here as we thought that councils had a statutory obligation to consult on the ecology before land of this nature could be sold. However, who knows, we may be wrong. As you can imagine many people are devastated by the news that a lovely open space will be closed to them and the wildlife value of the site destroyed for a greedy and elite minority.

I feel sure that you will be as outraged as we are. Are you able to help publicise this in any way, say through your connections at “The Star” or give us advice of how to engage the media? We will be discussing all this at a committee meeting this evening.

Hope you are keeping well and we may hear from you soon.

Kindest regards

Dr Diana Holland

*Footnote from me – the City Council does have a strict protocol and agreement prior to the sale of any countryside land holding – established by me in the early 1990s!
